A running account of Jesuit history in New Spain, including Guatemala, from the date of reestablishment of the Society by Ferdinand VII to 1867. Covers reorganization under Fathers José María Castañiza, Antonio Barroso, and Pedro Cantón, dissolution in 1821, ŕestoration in 1853, and the individual careers of many noted Jesuits. Quotes background documents and letters, from 1814 onward, of Fathers Castañiza and Francisco Arrieta, Archbishop Pedro José Fonte, Juan Francisco Castañiza (Bishop-elect of Durango and brother of Castañiza, José María), Viceroy Calleja, Antonio López de Santa Anna, Valentín Canalizo, and others. Contains information on the development of Jesuit educational institutions, particularly the Colegio de San Ildefonso. Initiated by Father Castañiza, continued by Francisco Mendizábal, Luis Gutiérrez Corral, and other Jesuits. Separate item is a list of the Jesuits in New Spain on January 22, 1821, when the Society was suppressed.
